Secluded Riverside Holiday Cottage near Toulouse

Puech del Grou

Are you looking for a stress-busting holiday away from the madding tourist crowds?
Do you hate the hustle and bustle of work and city life?
Do you yearn to escape from the rat-race to a place of retreat, tranquillity and total relaxation; where you can walk along wooded trails, sit beside a river and fish for trout, or maybe just sip your wine in the afternoon sunshine and listen to the river gushing below?

If so, Puech del Grou may be the answer to your dreams.

As you approach the cottage through hairpin bends, on a summer’s day, you can feel the clean, cool atmosphere of the granite hills of the Sidobre. The fierce southern sun is filtered through the leaves of the deciduous forest and your cares evaporate.

The cottage sits alone above a beautiful river in the Haut Languedoc National Park. The setting is magical, a haven of tranquillity amid the wild wooded hills along the trout-laden River Agout. Downstream from the cottage is a small reservoir and dam. Puech del Grou used to be the dam-keeper’s cottage.

A quaint old railway tunnel behind the house bears testimony to the disused mountain railway track which used to follow the river between Vabre and Brassac. The path which remains is a wonderful trail for walking or cycling, rarely used except by local fishermen.

If you are a keen fly-fisherman, Patrick, our neighbour and caretaker from the nearby water mill, will be happy to show you the best and safest fishing spots and to share his fly box with you.

After a stay at Puech del Grou you will feel spiritually uplifted, reinvigorated
and ready to face the world again.

Picture a place where there is no pollution; where there is no sound other than
the wild animals and the river; where at night the only lights visible come from the moon and the stars, and where you can be totally undisturbed. Such a place is Puech del Grou!

Sitting Area

Double bedroom

Twin bedroom

This two-bedroomed cottage is quaintly rustic in the French country style. All the rooms have large windows which allow unimpeded views of the valley above and below. When the weather is cooler, the cottage is heated by electric central heating, augmented by a large woodburning stove in the sitting room.

The sitting room, which leads into the dining area, has natural granite walls and tiled floor. It is furnished with a bed-settee, two easy chairs, a woodburner, TV, DVD and hifi. The dining room is light and airy, and furnished with a dining table and six chairs and a French dresser. It is an ideal setting for a fine French meal and a bottle or two of the local Gaillac wine, followed by a glass of cognac in front of the fire.

The kitchen has mountain spring water on tap. There is a downstairs shower room and separate WC. The washing machine is housed in the utility room with access from the terrace.

First Floor. All rooms have scenic views over the river valley and the hills beyond. The bathroom is beautiful and big enough to spend time in! From the bath, the view through the large windows is like a brightly coloured mural during the day and at night you can count the stars. Relaxing in the bath, you can clearly hear the music of the river below through the open window.

There are two spacious, bright bedrooms, one double and one twin, with polished wood floors throughout.
The beds are comfortable and you can go to sleep lulled by sound of the river and wake to the songs of the birds
and the sight of the tree tops on the hillside opposite.

In front of the cottage is a walled, natural granite terrace with open views of the stunning scenery.
You can enjoy your meal and glass of wine in full sunshine on the terrace
or, should you prefer, in a shady glade to one side of the house.
Garden furniture, barbecue facilities and store of wood for cooler evenings are provided.

A beautiful footpath following the route of the disused mountain railway passes through a tunnel behind the cottage. Wonderful walks can be taken along the river valley, where the River Agout crashes through deep gorges or expands into broad, calm reservoirs. The river is renowned for its trout fishing.

This delightful hideaway is less than 2 hours from Toulouse and an hour from Carcassonne (with cheap flights from various UK airports).
